A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
